The data is compiled by the state from unemployment insurance submissions. Because it deems the information proprietary, the state will not release the precise number of employees reported by each entity. The list is not comprehensive. For example, CVS Corp. has a significant presence in Massachusetts, but is not on the list because each of its stores is a separate corporation for legal purposes, company officials said.
