BiotechThe two goliaths of the state's biotechnology landscape, Genzyme and Biogen, had rebuilding years in 2006. Genzyme recorded its first loss in three years after accounting for the costs of acquiring AnorMed of Vancouver, a move it made to diversify its product line. Revenue was up smartly as sales of its treatments for rare diseases were strong. Biogen Idec's treatment for multiple sclerosis, Tysabri, returned to the market in July after sales were suspended for more than a year because of safety concerns. Biogen is betting that Tysabri ultimately will replace Avonex, its 10-year-old treatment for multiple sclerosis that generates half the company's revenue.
