Top real estate companies

The slowdown finally caught up with commercial properties -- office towers, shopping centers, and strip malls -- last year. Bloomberg's Real Estate Investment Trust index fell 22 percent last year, its first down year since 2002. The credit crunch brought big real estate deals to a virtual standstill in the second half. On the other hand, companies that already own prime real estate in downtown Boston are enjoying a seller's market. Supply is scarce and rents are on the rise. Ranked by revenue in 2007.
  Company Revenue (millions) Change (percent)
1 Boston Properties $1,502.7 4.2
2 Hospitality Properties Trust $1,285.5 25.7
3 HRPT Properties Trust $842.3 5.1
4 Senior Housing Properties Trust $188.0 8.0
5 Franklin Street Properties $128.9 16.0
6 Winthrop Realty Trust $70.6 0.3
7 New England Realty Associates $32.0 0.6
