The cymbal dynasty goes back to the early 17th century, in Constantinople. It began with Avedis Zildjian I, who stumbled upon a new way of creating alloys in 1618. He had been trying to create gold by combining base metals, but ended up with an alloy of copper, tin, and traces of silver, which was great for making cymbals. The secret formula has since been taught and passed on through the generations.
