Made in Mass.: Mason & Hamlin pianos
Cecille Joan Avila for Boston.com
Mason & Hamlin uses maple wood because it is generally considered by many manufacturers to be the best material for pianos. However, that poses a problem since maple doesn't come as long or wide as what's needed to make the piano's rim. The wood is lapped over to make it longer.
