REDWOOD CITY, Calif.—Cancer test developer Genomic Health Inc. said Monday it is teaming with drugmaker Pfizer Inc. to develop a test which can estimate how likely patients with Stage I-III renal carcinoma, clear cell type, that has not spread to other parts of the body will see a recurrence of the disease after surgery.
The clear cell type of renal carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults, affecting an estimated 25,000 people each year in the United States.
Genomic Health makes the Oncotype DX test, which predicts the likelihood of breast cancer recurrence and the likelihood of chemotherapy benefit in a large portion of early-stage breast cancer patients.
"Many early-stage renal carcinoma patients experience a recurrence of their cancer, yet there is no accurate way to identify the most aggressive cancers in advance," said Chu Chang, Genomic Health's vice president of business development. "This collaboration further expands our efforts to develop genomic tests for a variety of cancers that allow physicians and patients to individualize treatment decisions."
Financial terms of the partnership weren't disclosed.
Shares of Genomic Health rose 51 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $21.94 in morning trading.![]()
