NEW YORK—Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Thursday it is challenging the patent on Lybrel birth control pills and is being sued by the drug's maker, Wyeth.

Watson asked the Food and Drug Administration to approve a generic version of the drug before the patent expires. Wyeth sued Watson in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware on Wednesday, seeking to prevent Watson from selling generic Lybrel.

Shares of Corona, Calif.-based Watson fell 34 cents to $27.61 in aftermarket trading. They closed at $27.95 in the regular session.

Shares of Madison, N.J.-based Wyeth fell 37 cents to close at $40.28.
