NEW YORK—Shares of biotechnology companies closed mixed Friday, ending a week of earnings reports from the sector.
The American Stock Exchange's biotechnology index rose 1.97 points to 751.51. The index tracks several bellwether stocks. The Nasdaq Stock Market's biotechnology index, which covers a broader range of small- and midcap stocks, fell .38 points, to 805.63.
Meanwhile, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 42.91 points to 12,891.86 while the technology heavy Nasdaq fell 5.99 points to 2,422.93. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 9.02 points to 1,397.84.
Here's how several key biotechnology stocks performed Friday:
Foster City, Calif.-based Gilead Sciences Inc., up 38 cents to $51.40.
Thousand Oaks, Calif.-based Amgen Inc., down 15 cents to $42.25.
Cambridge, Mass.-based Biogen Idec Inc., up $1.45, or 2.3 percent, to $65.12.
South San Francisco, Calif.-based Genentech Inc., down 95 cents to $71.97.
