NEW YORK—Shares of large pharmaceutical companies opened higher Monday along with the broader markets, which edged up on news Mars Inc. will buy chewing gum maker Wm. Wrigley for $23 billion with help from Warren Buffett.
The American Stock Exchange's Pharmaceutical Index rose .85 points to 303.82. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 12 points to 12,903. The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained nearly 3 points to 1,400.
Here's how some key drug makers fared Monday:
Kenilworth, N.J.-based Schering-Plough up 18 cents to $18.84.
Madison, N.J.-based Wyeth up 33 cents to $45.30.
Whitehouse Station, N.J.-based Merck & Co. shares up 74 cents to $41.46.
New York-based Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., up 2 cents to $22.17.![]()
