NEW YORK—Shares of biotechnology companies fell early Tuesday as Genentech and Biogen Idec dragged the sector lower on news of a failed study on their lupus treatment Rituxan.

The American Stock Exchange's biotechnology index fell 7.8 points to 749.65, while the broader Nasdaq biotechnology index fell 5.86 points, to 803.43.

Here's how several key biotechnology stocks performed Tuesday:

Gilead Sciences Inc., down 46 cents to $52.03.

Amgen Inc., up 17 cents to $42.

Biogen Idec Inc., down $3.17, or 5 percent, to $61.45.

Genentech Inc., down $3.19, or 4.4 percent, to $69.97.
