NEW YORK—Shares of biotechnology companies closed lower Friday as the broader market gave up earlier gains made on a positive employment report from the federal government.

Amgen Inc., down 30 cents to $42.93.
Biogen Idec Inc., down 2 cents to $62.31.
Genentech Inc., down $1.11 to $67.24.
Gilead Sciences Inc. bucked the trend, adding 63 cents to $53.63.
