NEW YORK—Shares of biotechnology companies closed higher Tuesday as the broader market rose despite a series of disappointing earnings reports and record-high oil prices.

Gilead Sciences Inc., up 47 cents to $54.14.
Amgen Inc., up 21 cents to $43.
Biogen Idec Inc., up 13 cents to $63.14.
Genentech Inc., up 38 cents to $68.17.
