NEW YORK—Shares of large pharmaceutical companies closed lower Tuesday amid a broader market recovery that came despite disappointing earnings reports and record-high oil prices.

Wyeth, up 24 cents to $45.80.
Merck & Co., down 14 cents to $38.84
Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., down 7 cents to $23.18.
