NEW YORK—Shares of large pharmaceutical companies lacked direction in early Friday trading. The broader market slipped as investors digested new record highs for oil and a surprising jump in new home construction.

In early trading the Dow Jones industrial average is down 6 points at the 12,986 level.

Here's how some key drug makers are doing Friday:

Wyeth down 29 cents to $44.13.

Merck & Co. shares down 19 cents to $39.81.

Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., down 6 cents to $21.91.

Pfizer down 4 cents to $20.04.

Meanwhile, shares of Astrazeneca PLC rose 95 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $43.40.

Eli Lilly & Co. shares also rose 57 cents to $49.24.
