Covidien gets FDA approval for surgery kit

NORTH HAVEN, Conn.—Medical device maker and diversified health care company Covidien Ltd. said Tuesday that the Food and Drug Administration granted approval to market a surgery kit for use in laparoscopic procedures.

Covidien's SILS Procedure Kits can be used by surgeons to perform the procedures through a single incision through a patient's belly button.

The kit is set for launch this summer.

Covidien also plans to make custom kits for applications including urologic, gynecologic and bariatric surgery.

Shares of Covidien close Monday at $49.50.
