NEW YORK—Health care equipment and supply stocks rose in early trading Wednesday, despite a dip in the broader market, as some investors were encouraged by better-than-expected results from aluminum maker Alcoa Inc.

How shares of some major health care equipment and supply companies fared shortly after the opening bell:

Covidien Ltd. added 2 cents to $48.02.

Stryker Corp. jumped 59 cents to $63.93.

Baxter International Inc. gained 27 cents to $65.73.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. rose 71 cents to $50.95.
