SEATTLE—Drug developer ZymoGenetics Inc. will receive a $5 million payment from Bayer HealthCare as part of an agreement between the companies to sell the blood-clotting drug Recothrom.

ZymoGenetics said the payment was triggered by Bayer filing an application with the European Medicines Agency to market the drug as a topical aid to control surgical bleeding.

Last year, Bayer acquired the rights to Recothrom in all markets outside the United States. Bayer also agreed to help ZymoGenetics with U.S. sales for three years, ZymoGenetics spokeswoman Susan Specht said.

Bayer HealthCare is a subsidiary of Bayer AG.

Recothrom, which was launched in January, is applied to the skin to help control oozing bleeding during surgery.

Shares of ZymoGenetics rose 23 cents, or 2.8 percent, to $8.57 Tuesday morning.
