Stop & Shop offers free antibiotics

NEW YORK - Stop & Shop, the supermarket chain owned by Royal Ahold NV, said it will offer some antibiotics free of charge to attract customers grappling with the US recession.

The free-prescription program covers 36 generic antibiotics from Jan. 2 to March 21 at all Stop & Shop pharmacies, the Quincy-based company said yesterday.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, offers prescriptions for more than 300 generic drugs for $4 a month. Target Corp., the second-largest US discount retailer, has a similar program. Stop & Shop offers more than 350 generics for $9.99 for a 90-day supply.
