WASHINGTON - Genzyme Corp., the world's largest maker of drugs for rare genetic disorders, sued Impax Laboratories Inc. to block it from selling a generic version of the Renvela kidney medicine.

Impax, based in Hayward, Calif., is seeking Food and Drug Administration approval to sell a low-cost copy of the drug. Genzyme wants a court ruling that prevents the FDA from granting approval until a patent on the drug expires in 2014, according to the federal complaint filed April 3 in Baltimore.

Impax said yesterday it is challenging the Genzyme patents. Last month, Genzyme sued Impax over its bid to sell a generic version of Renagel, an older kidney medicine.
