PROVIDENCE - Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch has approved a new affiliation between Roger Williams Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Health Services.

The hospitals have created a holding company that would oversee both institutions while each maintains its identity.

The combined arrangement is set to begin in January.

Roger Williams would continue as a secular, academic hospital. St. Joseph would remain a Roman Catholic community hospital.

Lynch said yesterday the proposal went through a “rigorous review.’’ It was previously approved by state health director David Gifford.
