Biogen Idec Inc. said it is advancing a potential treatment for hemophilia A into a registrational clinical trial.

Biogen Idec is collaborating on the project with Swedish Orphan Biovitrum.

The decision to advance the drug candidate into a registrational clinical trial was based on ”promising data” from an earlier test, the companies said.

The current treatment of severe hemophilia A, a rare inherited disorder in which the ability of a person’s blood to clot is impaired, requires frequent injections, the companies noted. The hope is that treatment with the new drug will require far fewer injections.

Biogen Idec has officially relocated its headquarters from Cambridge to Weston.
