EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Medical instrument and test kit maker Thermo Fisher Scientific is shutting down a Rhode Island facility and putting more than 60 people out of work.

A company spokesman confirmed that the company’s East Providence facility will close next June, and its functions moved to other plants around the country.

The spokesman told The Providence Journal that some employees will be offered work elsewhere, but most will be laid off, with a severance package and career counseling.

Thermo Fisher Scientific is based in Waltham, Mass., and has 35,000 employees worldwide with annual revenues of about $10 billion.
