Lockpicks by Open Locksport
By: Schuyler Towne
Pledged: $87,407 of $6,000 goal
Industry: Product design
Funded: Sept. 24, 2010
Schuyler Towne, who deems himself a competitive lockpicker, came up with his own line of tools with a practice kit that he offered to backers for only $20. The problem was that the picks were too fragile and were priced too low to deliver. Scott Kirsner reported that after the campaign he quit his job as a graphic designer to fulfill the orders. When his backers weren’t getting what they paid for, he started getting calls from the Massachusetts attorney general’s office. He is now working as a barista and using his own money to fill the Kickstarter orders.
