The newest park benches in Boston require instructions.
After all, they aren’t your average seats. The two simple benches that turned up recently on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway were built at MIT and can charge your smartphones with solar-powered batteries. They even connect to the Internet, and light up after 5 p.m. Their designers intend to add sensors to the seats to detect for air pollution and even whether someone nearby is smoking.
They are by far the most cutting edge pieces of public furniture to appear in a park in Boston, but will anyone know what to do with these sophisticated stools?
