Bijan Sabet of Spark Capital is one of the area’s go-to voices in mobile, social, and the consumer web, and his firm now has more funds at his disposal:
Of the $1.8 billion raised by Massachusetts venture capitalists in 2013, $1.6 billion was raised by just three marquee names: Battery Ventures of Waltham, Third Rock Ventures of Boston, and Spark Capital of Boston.
Michael Farrell reports in the Globe today that the firms were able to grab the lion’s share of area funding when venture firms nationwide raised just over $4 billion.
Battery also happened to raise the largest round anywhere during the first quarter of this year, in a particularly challenging fundraising environment for venture capitalists.
“Their success comes as the fund-raising climate market for venture firms generally has been tough,” Farrell wrote. “The market for initial public offerings of new companies, a major payoff day for venture firms, is still in recovery, and biotechnology and life science backers are showing signs of fatigue.
For Spark and Third Rock, the raise is each firms’ largest ever.
Here are the six firms to raise funds in the state, and how much they raised:
— Battery Ventures LP, $650.00
— Third Rock Ventures LLC, $516.00 million
— Spark Capital, $450.00 million
— Softbank Capital Partners, LP $250.00 million
— Amplify Partners LP, $16.03 million
— Vodia Ventures LLC, $2.13 million
