Online glasses retailer Warby Parker debuts bookish Boston brick-and-mortar boutique

Warby Parker’s stylish frames, charitable giving, and online convenience have made the online glasses retailer a hit among hipsters and the hard-sell optometrist averse. Now, the New York start-up is expanding its retail presence with a just-opened Newbury location.

The move comes from founders who both have ties to the city, as co-CEO Neil Blumenthal explained to me in an email.

“We’re really excited to be in Boston,” he wrote. “After recently opening up our first flagship store in SoHo, Boston was the next natural step. We have a personal connection to the city—I went to Tufts and met my wife there—and my co-founder Jeff is from Wellesley.”

Boston’s role as epicenter of academia did not hurt, either: Blumenthal said glasses are the universal symbol of smarts, making Warby Parker feel right at home in the Hub.

And the academic influences on the new shop are readily apparent: It is modeled after a public library.
