Turning used items into cash can seem like more trouble than it’s worth. But Sold, a new online service from a team of Boston developers, offers a radically simple way to profitably dispose of your odds and ends.
Sold uses a smartphone app designed for Apple Inc.’s iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. To sell something, just type in a description of the item and shoot several photographs of it, using the device’s built-in camera. Many trade-in services, like Boston-based Gazelle Inc., only deal in consumer electronics items. So does Sold, but they’ll also help you sell unwanted shoes, watches , handbags or designer sunglasses.
Once you’ve submitted your description and photos, Sold promises to get back to you with an offer within 24 hours. In fact, when we tested it by offering a nearly-new HTC One smartphone, Sold responded in just a couple of hours. The phone sells for $600 new; Sold offered to buy the used phone for $370.
If you’re not up to the hassle of selling your stuff on eBay or Craigslist, Sold is a pleasant and profitable alternative.
