Boston’s carsharing powerhouse Zipcar has a fleet of new Honda Insights with a unique accessory: For each hour they are on the road, the company will give $1 worth of free drive time to to GLAAD, a national LGBT advocacy group.
Launching last Thursday, the program will run approximately two months, Zipcar’s Jennifer Mathews wrote in an email.
“We do not have an official statement, but I can tell you that Zipcar has been an active participant in support of LGBT equality and rights for quite a while now so working with GLAAD has been a natural extension of our efforts,” she noted. “Zipcar’s involvement with the movement takes place on a local level (riding in city-level Pride parades, working with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in SF, working with rightrides.org in NYC etc.) to more national efforts (in 2012, Zipcar signed the amicus brief challenging recently-overturned DOMA).”
Mathews said that there would be 27 cars with special rainbox branding participating in the program in cities from Atlanta to Seattle, including Zipcar’s hometown Boston.
