The venture capital firm Polaris Partners has finalized a deal to relocate from a Waltham office park to Boston’s growing Innovation District, following the migration of other investment firms from the suburbs to the city.
The firm that has invested in technology and health care start-ups will take up residence in the Fan Pier development and fill 16,000 square feet of space in a high rise located at One Marina Park Drive, according to the building’s landlord, the Fallon Co.
It is expected to move there next year and officially open its corporate headquarters at the Fan Pier in early 2016. Battery Ventures, another Waltham venture capital firm, has also announced that it plans to open in the same building.
Over the past several years, the area has attracted many software firms and biotechnology companies as Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino has pushed to transform the area into the city’s center for technology businesses.
“Polaris will have front row access to the entrepreneurs who are working, thriving, and developing new ventures in the Innovation District,” said Menino in a press release.
Polaris has backed such companies as LogMeIn, a Boston software company; Tulia, an online real estate service in San Francisco; and Imprivata Inc., a medial records company in Lexington. It was founded in 1996 and has $3.5 billion under management. Its other offices are in San Francisco and Dublin, Ireland.
