Stocks are closing mostly lower after another batch of weak earnings reports weighs on the market.

The Dow Jones industrial average managed to close with a gain of nearly four points at 13,107 Friday after spending much of the day in the red.

The broader Standard & Poor’s 500 index gave up a point to end at 1,412 and the Nasdaq composite edged up less than two points at 2,988.

Poor earnings from Goodyear, Verisign, Interpublic and other companies disappointed investors.

A pickup in U.S. economic growth in the third quarter wasn’t enough to get buyers back in the market.

Three stocks fell for every two that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was in line with the recent average at 3.2 billion shares.end of story marker
