Dollar, gold fall in Europe

LONDON—The U.S. dollar was lower against other major currencies in European trading Tuesday. Gold fell.

The euro traded at $1.4733, up from $1.4697 late Monday in New York. Later, in midday trading in New York on Tuesday, the euro fetched $1.4744.

Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Monday, included 109.73 Japanese yen, down from 110.17; 1.0943 Swiss francs, down from 1.0978; and 1.0614 Canadian dollars, down from 1.0640.

The British pound was quoted at $1.8652, up from $1.8643.

In New York trading at midday, the dollar bought 109.70 yen and 1.0934 francs, while the pound was worth $1.8655.

Gold traded in London at $788.75 per troy ounce, down from $796.25 late Monday.
