Shares of Supervalu dropped after an analyst downgraded the chain, saying grocery store promotion wars and higher sales of lower-priced items are pressuring profit margins. Food retailers are competing by cutting prices on basic items below cost to drive customers to stores, said analyst Meredith Adler. Supervalu needs to find the right balance between lowering prices and using less promotion, she said.![]()
