Cummins, the largest maker of heavy-duty diesel truck engines in North America, said third-quarter profit fell 59 percent and sales in most markets won’t rise next year as the recession curbs demand. Third-quarter net income dropped to $95 million, or 48 cents a share, from $229 million, or $1.17, a year earlier, the Columbus, Ind.-based company said. Sales dropped 31 percent to $2.53 billion.
