Shares of drilling companies gained as President Obama unveiled a proposal to allow oil and natural gas drilling off the East Coast, and crude oil traded above $84 a barrel for the first time since October 2008. Denbury Resources Inc., of Plano, Texas, which explores for oil and gas primarily in the Gulf Coast region, was among the gainers. Other companies that rose include Continental Resources Inc. and Newfield Exploration Co.
