In recent years, they'd load their motorcycles onto a trailer and ride once they arrived in South Dakota.
‘‘It was a long grueling ride,’’ David Welte said. ‘‘Melanie did it twice and said ‘I'm not doing it again’ so that was that.’’
Over the past few years, Welte served as the afternoon editor in Des Moines. Her day began by teasing the AP’s morning editor about how much work he had left for her to complete, and ended with her closing the bureau each night with a message similar to her morning advisory.
