City Sports, a retail chain of 21 stores that sell athletic footwear and apparel, said it has scheduled a Thursday grand opening celebration for its new store in Boston’s Financial District.
At one time, the new 8,000-square-foot store at 225 Franklin St. was the site of a bank vault for State Street Corp., the financial services company. To pay homage to the space’s heritage, the new City Sports store features a wall fashioned from more than 2,000 pennies, the chain said.
In addition to the penny wall, there is a 50-foot track where customers can test the more than 250 styles of footwear that the store stocks.
In a statement, company president and chief executive Eddie Albertian, said, “The Financial District is a central location for many of our customers, so we are delighted to be able to offer the convenience of a City Sports store exactly where they live, work, and play.”
Besides the Boston area, the chain also has stores in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. The chain is set to mark its 30th anniversary later this year.
