Sunday is National Coffee Day this year, and Dunkin’ Donuts is not about to let such a red-letter day go by without a salute to caffeine.

In this case, the Canton-based coffee-and-baked-goods chain plans to give away free small cups of hot or iced coffee to folks who have downloaded the Dunkin’ app to their iPhones, iPod Touch devices, or smartphones that use Google’s Android operating system. The offer is good only on Sept. 29 at participating stores.

And the deal is: No app, no free Joe.

Participating Dunkin’ Donuts stores plan to celebrate National Coffee Day in other ways as well. On both Saturday and Sunday, 16-ounce packaged coffee will be available for a discounted price of $5.99 (typically it’s $8.99) , and a 14-count box of Dunkin’ Donuts K-Cup packs can be had for a special price of $7.99, the company said. Generally, a 14-count box of K-Cup packs goes for $11.99.

“As the nation’s coffee leader, National Coffee Day is one of our favorite days of the year and a wonderful opportunity for us to recognize the important role our coffee plays in keeping millions of our guests running all day, every day,” John Costello, Dunkin’ Brands president of global marketing and innovation, said in a statement. “We are very much looking forward to celebrating this holiday by thanking our loyal guests through our mobile offer for a free cup of our famous coffee, special discounts on our packaged coffee and K-Cup® packs, and other exciting National Coffee Day programs still to come.”
