The grapefruit season is off to a slow start, but so far, the quality is good, and growers are optimistic the citrus harvest will pick up, said Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc., the Lakeville-Middleborough cooperative perhaps best known for its juice and juice-blend lines. Although many members are cranberrry growers, the Ocean Spray cooperative also includes grapefruit growers in Florida. Ocean Spray said its Florida growers expect the grapefruit season to run from October through April. In a good year, a single grapefruit tree can generate 1,300 to 1,500 pounds of fruit, the cooperative’s press release noted. The grapefruit will primarily support both Ocean Spray’s Ruby Red and 100% Juice Line, including the new Citrus 100% Juice Blends, as well as 100% White Grapefruit Juice and 100% Ruby Red Grapefruit Blend.
