American Science and Engineering Inc., or AS&E, a Billerica company specializing in X-ray detection technology, said that it has received an order for 28 of its ZBV mobile screening systems that will be used for law enforcement and security applications in several countries in the Middle East.

The company’s press release did not elaborate further on the identity of the Middle East customer placing the order.

The ZBV screening system is built into a delivery van, and that configuration allows for immediate deployment and rapid inspection in efforts to detect explosives, drugs, currency, alcohol, cigarettes, and other organic threats or contraband.  To date, AS&E says it has sold more than 675 ZBV systems, which are used by government agencies, border authorities, law enforcement, military organizations, and security agencies in more than 55 countries.

A statement from Chuck Dougherty, AS&E’s president and chief executive, was included in the company’s release.

“This order—the largest single international ZBV booking — confirms that we continue to successfully execute on our ZBV pipeline in key geographic markets,” Dougherty said. “The sizable order is part of an increased trend towards using Z Backscatter technology and the ZBV platform for broader, more traditional public safety and security applications.  It is also a measure of AS&E’s long-standing and successful relationship with one of our key Middle East channel partners and its keen understanding of the unique value of the ZBV system.”
