The last phase of the adaptive reuse project for Boott Mills in Lowell is complete, said WinnCompanies, a real estate firm that worked on the project with Rees-Larkin Development.
The Boott Cotton Mill complex operated as a cotton mill for more than 120 years before finally closing in 1955. WinnCompanies acquired Boott Mill West in September 2012.
Boott Mill West, the final of four phases of the historic redevelopment project, included the renovation of 140,000 square feet into 78 mixed-income apartments and 40,000 square feet of commercial space. The apartment are 50 percent leased. Sixteen units are reserved for low to moderate income residents, WinnCompanies said.
“Saving and re-purposing large scale historic buildings such as Boott Mills and converting them into active mixed-use and mixed-income properties that benefit the community is something we at Winn pride ourselves on,” Gilbert Winn, managing principal of WinnCompanies, said in a statement “We are honored to have had the opportunity to work with the City of Lowell and our financing partners to successfully complete the redevelopment of such an important landmark in Massachusetts’ history.”
