The turmoil continues at the Market Basket supermarket chain. Today, employee movement organizers are using the mantra “71 stores, 71 rallies” as they encourage employees and customers to continue to protest.
The 71-store chain began as a single grocery store in Lowell, Massachusetts. In 1916, Greek immigrants Athanasios (“Arthur”) and Efrosini Demoulas opened a store specializing in fresh lamb. Two of their six children took over the family business in 1954, and expanded the “mom and pop” operation into a supermarket chain. Market Basket currently operates 42 stores in Massachusetts, 28 in New Hampshire, and a single store in Maine.
