Market Basket, the local grocery chain whose leadership issues have pitted employees loyal to ex-CEO Arthur T. Demoulas against his cousin, Arthur S. Demoulas, has been sued by two former employees for labor law violations.
The Boston Globe uncovered the class action suit, filed yesterday in Worcester Superior Court. Daniel Sheridan, who worked for the company on and off from 1995 until a month and a half ago (when he was fired), accused the company of locking overnight shift employees, who cleaned and stocked stores after hours, in the store. Doors were locked from closing time until the store opened the next morning. The doors that weren’t locked had alarms, so employees could only use them in cases of “legit emergency,” Sheridan said.
Because of this, breaks—which the suit says were unpaid—had to be taken on the premises.
The second plaintiff was not named in The Globe’s report.
