A source with knowledge of Market Basket’s business operations tells Boston.com business was down close to 70 percent by the middle of this past week.
Previous reports have said business is down more than 90 percent at some individual stores.
A boycott and thinning inventories have been at the center of a protest movement staged by employees and customers to reinstate former CEO Arthur T. Demoulas.
While warehouse workers walked off the job and stores began refusing deliveries last weekend, employees did not begin encouraging a customer boycott until Monday.
Many customers now appear to be heeding that demand.
With Saturday and Sunday being popular days for grocery shopping, the continued protest efforts are likely to result in an even steeper drop in store sales.
