LAST-MINUTE MOTHER’S DAY GIFT IDEAS
Still searching for a gift for mom for Mother’s Day? Don’t worry. There is still time. Here are some great last-minute ideas.
However expected they may be, you really can’t go wrong getting your mom a bouquet of flowers. Some flower websites, such as ProFlowers.com, are offering deals exclusively for the holiday. The online floral retailer is offering promotional TV and radio codes which can be applied online for free shipping.
Follow the honey
Take your sweet mom to Follow The Honey, a specialty honey store near Harvard Square in Cambridge. There, she can sample different flavors and textures at the raw honey bar. But that’s not all. The store offers seasonal varieties of honey from all over the world, honey-filled truffles from local makers, beeswax candles, and soap crafted with honey at various prices.
Let her eat (cup)cake
On Mother’s Day, calories are not a thing. One of Boston’s many cupcake spots should do the trick. Lulu’s Sweet Shoppe in the North End makes them on the moist side, and all flavors — from Red Velvet to Chocolate Peanutbutter — are $2.75 a pop and $16 for a half dozen. At Crumbs, which just opened on Federal Street, the cupcakes are big and, well, cakey. A box of the “Best Seller Classic Size Collection,” featuring favorite flavors such as Cookies and Cream and Devil’s Food, costs $40.
A crafty gift idea
If your Mom is crafty and creative, chances are she’d give up a bouquet of flowers in favor of something she can make herself. At Bead + Fiber on Harrison Avenue, you’ll find everything from tools to the beads themselves (styles vary in price). They also have classes, such as Advanced Tunisian Crochet ($40), and Beaded Beads, which is free, among others. Boston Bead Company, which has locations in Cambridge and Salem, also offers classes in various levels and a variety of beads for sale.
Brunch is the thing
When it comes to Mother’s Day, brunch is completely essential. And since there are so many brunch places in Greater Boston, there’s a spot for every price range. At Brownstone in the South End, for example, brunch is $32 a person, which includes access to the restaurant’s make-your-own Bloody Mary bar. At the Omni Parker House — home of the original Boston Crème Pie — guests have access to a buffet for $49 per adult and $19 per child under 12. But if all Mom really wants is a giant plate of huevos rancheros, that can be arranged at the Pour House on Boylston Street for less than $10.
Take mom to a show
There are live performances of all sorts all across Boston and the surrounding area on Mother’s Day. Check out Artsboston.org to see what shows are playing and to buy your tickets.
Take in a movie
Normally, most summer blockbusters are not aimed at Mom, but the latest adaptation of the classic novel “The Great Gatsby” might be the exception. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, opens on Friday, May 10. If you want to take Mom, you should buy tickets in advance.
