Easthampton Savings Bank is one of 88 banks nationwide that is participating in this year’s “Lights, Camera, Save!” video contest for teens that’s organized by the Education Foundation of the American Bankers Association.

The contest asks teens ages 13-18 years old to create a video that educates themselves, and their peers, about the value of saving and using money wisely. The videos can’t be longer than 90 seconds and must be an original work by the student (including all music and images).

To enter, teens need to contact their local participating bank (see the list here) to register and obtain an information packet. They can then create the video and submit it by Nov. 30 to that bank for local judging. The banks will choose one local winning video in December to be submitted for judging at the national level. National winners will be notified in March, and awarded their prizes. The national judges include:

  • Janet Bodnar, editor of Kiplinger's Personal Finance

  • John D. Craig, Ph.D., vice president for education & outreach, WNED Buffalo-Toronto

  • Matt Dozier, president and CEO, EAST Initiative (Environmental and Spatial Technology)

  • Laura Levine, president and CEO, Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy

  • Scott Rubens, multi-media director, WUSA 9-Washington, D.C.

In addition to recognition for their video, national winners will receive cash to fund their savings goal, plus a donation to their school. First, second and third prizes are as follows:

1st Place:
Student Prize $3,000
School Prize $1,500

2nd Place :
Student Prize $1,500
School Prize $1,000

3rd Place:
Student Prize $500
School Prize $500

The videos of last year’s winners can be seen on YouTube. Some of them also created how-to videos for this year’s entrants, offering tips on how to create the content and supporting material for the project.

You can find out more information on the ABA Education Foundation’s website. And let me know if you enter the contest. I’d love to hear about your ideas, and it would be fun to share some of the entries here too.
