Looking for the best deal

The state Division of Insurance website, autoratecompare.doi.state.ma.us, allows drivers to compare auto insurance premiums under the new competitive system. After a motorist answers some basic questions, the site generates sample rates.

1. On the first screen, you'll be asked to enter your ZIP code, annual mileage, years of driving experience, and the type of vehicle.

2. The second screen asks users to select the statement that best characterizes their driving record, such as: "Driver had no moving violations or at-fault accidents within the past 6 years." It also asks users to choose the level of coverage they want: mandatory - the minimum allowed - or standard, which has more extensive coverage.

3. Based on the information supplied, the third screen displays a list of sample premiums from companies selling auto insurance in Massachusetts, along with information about discounts they offer. There are links to each insurer's website and to independent agents. The entire process takes less than a minute.
