Time is nearly up for tax procrastinators. The deadline for filing state and federal taxes is midnight tonight. If you're still reading this, you probably need all the help you can get. Here are some suggestions and tips, compiled by Globe correspondent Stephanie Peters:
1. File online - The Internal Revenue Service offers a free filing program at irs.gov for taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of less than $54,000. Also, some online preparers offer free editions for simple returns.
2. Get help - For example, Tax-Aide offers free one-on-one counseling (see aarp.org for details), and H&R Block offices have extended hours today.
3. Call the IRS - Taxpayers can access prerecorded tips at 1-800-829-4477. Representatives will be available until 10 p.m. at 1-800-829-1040.
4. Double check forms - The IRS recommends taxpayers check their Social Security numbers, and make sure they have all necessary signatures and dates. Make checks payable to "United States Treasury."
5. Copy documents - Staples and Office Depot will copy tax forms free.
6. Take a break - Dunkin' Donuts is giving free doughnuts to customers who buy coffee today. The Papa John's restaurant chain is offering $10.40 pizzas.
7. Don't panic - About the state's new requirement that you show proof of having health insurance. Visit the Department of Revenue's website at mass.gov or call 1-800-392-6089.
8. Find a post office staying open late - Visit usps.com/tax for locations.
9. Use an IRS-provided envelope - It's pre-addressed, ensuring that it will get to the right place.
10. Buy more time - File extensions or download forms at irs.gov.
