McFarlane considers camping a lifestyle preference, but also sees it at a frugal alternative to resort vacations.
"When we go camping it's about $35 a night for camping, versus $100 a night for a hotel," McFarlane said. "We save on food because we cook our own at the campsite. And we save money on kennel costs because we bring the dogs with us. We do have to pay for the dogs, but it's $5 per night versus whatever a kennel would be."
