10. What to do about: Social Security number theft

Alert the Social Security Administration if your social security number is stolen, but only consider changing your number in the most dire situations, according to Privacy Rights Clearinghouse.

To be eligible, you must meet the administration's fraud victim criteria. Stolen social security cards can be replaced by calling (800) 772-1213 or through the Web.
