Unemployed? A way to get your medications for free

Last week, the drug company Pfizer announced that it was making 70 of its most popular drugs available at no cost to people who have lost their jobs and don't have health insurance.

According to a press release from the company, an individual may be eligible for this offer (which is called the MAINTAIN program) if they:

- became unemployed on or after January 1st of this year,
- were taking an eligible drug for three months or more when they lost their job, and
- do not have a prescription drug benefit.

If you meet these three requirements, you could receive your previously prescribed medication at no cost for up to one year. And, it is interesting to note that spouses and other dependents may also be available for the free prescriptions.

The drugs that Pfizer is making available at no cost include Celebrex, Lipitor and a wide range of antibiotics, antidepressants, and heart medications. To learn more, call 866-706-2400. Applications for the MAINTAIN program will be accepted through the end of this year. To complete an application, visit this website. Applications can be completed on-line starting July 1, 2009.
